Woodcock Over Longstone Edge

One late afternoon on a winter's walk across Longstone Edge a few years ago, I put up countless woodcock which were resting up, finding shelter from the lying snow. Being nocturnal, woodcock often migrate to our shores in large numbers on moonlit winter nights as they escape harsher weather on the continent.
